Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), is a visionary leader with a strong record of public service. With over 20 years of experience in development policy, he has spearheaded innovative initiatives that align with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).

Under Dr. Gbadegesin’s leadership, LAWMA has implemented effective waste segregation and recycling programs, significantly reducing waste volume and creating job opportunities in recycling businesses. Public awareness and education on waste management have also been prioritized, fostering a culture of sustainability among residents. The LAWMA Academy, under his direction, has expanded its role as an educational arm, educating school children on best waste management practices and enhancing public understanding of environmental stewardship.

Moreover, Dr. Gbadegesin has placed a greater focus on market sanitation, recognizing the importance of maintaining cleanliness in marketplaces. LAWMA has intensified efforts to ensure proper waste disposal and sanitation practices in markets, contributing to a healthier and more hygienic environment for traders and shoppers alike. Additionally, LAWMA has implemented waste-to-energy programs, including modular biodigesters at markets, to efficiently manage organic waste and generate energy. These biodigesters aim to not only lower organic waste methane levels but also contribute to sustainable energy production, aligning with LAWMA’s commitment to responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).

Utilizing cutting-edge technologies like waste-to-energy systems and smart waste bins, LAWMA has improved operational efficiency and minimized environmental impact. Dr. Gbadegesin has also fostered collaborations with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private enterprises, optimizing resources and developing innovative solutions to waste management challenges.

Furthermore, LAWMA’s efforts under Dr. Gbadegesin’s guidance have extended to eliminating illegal dumpsites, marine waste management, street sweeping schemes, and empowering local communities through sweepers’ programs, contributing to economic growth and poverty alleviation in Lagos State.
