Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, a distinguished technocrat and transformative leader, is currently serving his second term as the Director General/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). He was initially appointed in August 2019 by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and later reappointed in October 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Kashifu’s tenure at NITDA has been characterised by groundbreaking initiatives in digital innovation, skills development, entrepreneurial growth, and overall technological advancement in Nigeria.

Under his visionary leadership, NITDA has played a pivotal role in enhancing digital literacy and skills nationwide, fostering innovations in IT infrastructure, establishing regulatory frameworks, and catalysing job creation opportunities in the digital space. Kashifu’s strategic approach has not only impacted the digital landscape in Nigeria but has also contributed significantly to the nation’s economic growth.

Some of the remarkable achievements during Kashifu’s leadership include the training of over 3.3 million Nigerians in digital literacy and saving over ₦311 billion for the Nigerian government through IT project clearances. In addition, his market-creating regulatory instruments led to the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and helped attract over $4.4 billion in investments into Nigeria’s startup ecosystem in the past five years, thereby bolstering the country’s economic development.

Prior to his tenure at NITDA, Kashifu served as a Senior Technology Architect at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where he significantly contributed to the development of the bank’s Technology Architecture Repository and implemented a software license rationalisation programme that saved the bank over $5 million annually. His career journey began at Galaxy Backbone Ltd., where he excelled to the role of Senior Solutions Architect, overseeing the deployment and management of critical technology infrastructure.

Kashifu holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, and is a Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE). His commitment to lifelong learning and professional development is evidenced by his participation in executive education programmes at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, Oxford University, and the MIT Sloan School of Management.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership, Kashifu has received numerous accolades and awards, including the African Achievers Award, an Honorary Doctorate from California Metropolitan University, the Outstanding Corporate Governance CEO Award by Forbes, and the ISACA Global Inspirational Leadership Award. Furthermore, he has been honoured by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) as one of the 100 Leading Telecom and ICT Personalities in Nigeria.

Hailing from Hadejia, Jigawa State, Kashifu’s journey from a tech support engineer to the helm of Nigeria’s apex IT regulatory body exemplifies his dedication, expertise, and strategic prowess. He continues to steer Nigeria’s digital economy forward through NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2024–2027 (SRAP 2.0), positioning the country at the forefront of global technological advancement and digital transformation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
